Meet The Artist: Golden Grey
On Meet The Artist, we want you to get to know the players on our label a bit better, so we ask them five questions -- some about music, some not -- and get them to tell us a little more about themselves, their tunes, and what goes on inside those creative brains.
What’s the overarching theme of your music? Or, in particular, the theme of this upcoming/current/latest release?
When it comes to releasing albums, I adore themes. I released an album in 2018 through Full Flight Records called “Colours” and each track was painted a different colour. “Maroonish Teal”, “Pinkish Purple” and “Goldish Grey” were just some of the titled tracks. I also released a chiptune-based album through BleepLove called “8-Bit Machine”, each track was loosely named after video game references.
In 2019, I’m excited to be releasing the EP entitled “Numbers” through Biblioteka Records. It contains six tracks, each track is titled a number. Stay tuned!
What drove you to music?
I grew up with a love for electronic music, specifically artists such as The Crystal Method, Prodigy and Aphex Twin. As I matured, so did my taste in music as I discovered downtempo electronic artists, Tycho, Tennyson and Baths.
It eventually lead to my inspiration to creating a sound of my own. I began experimenting with synthesizers, drum machines and sample pads until Golden Grey was born.
If your overall sound was weather, what type of weather do you think would describe it best?
Unlike most people, I am a fan of the rainy weather. I love the gloomy, moody weather so naturally it translates into my music. The track “Goldish Grey” is a good example of this with the lyrics “I love staying home on a rainy day”.
What’s your favourite flower, and why?
I’ve never actually thought about my favourite flower prior to this question but after some intensive research, I’ve discovered it to be the Ranunculus. I chose this flower because of the beautiful yet colourful spiral of the petal.
What’s next for Golden Grey?
I will be releasing the album “Numbers” through Biblioteka Records including a 7inch vinyl-single release. Furthermore, I plan to perform at events and festivals Canada-wide throughout the year. You can keep up-to-date by following Golden Grey on social media on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
